What are bases?
Bases are the primary and most important objective on the Frontier. These are where mechs spawn from, and they serve as points to control in the ongoing battle for territory. Without them, your faction is forced to operate from its headquarters, an often tedious and long distance affair.
Viewing the Bases
In-Game via Baselist
The
baselist command will show you the entire list of all the bases, their current owners, any faction trying to capture a base, your range to the base, and if you own it (or are trying to capture it) the amount of fuel it currently has.
If you'd like a more graphical representation of the map, try the
baselist/map command. This will show an ASCII map with color-coded bases. You may
The Web-Based Map
Perhaps the clearest option for viewing objectives is the web-based map. You may toggle various options to view different kinds of objectives (in addition to bases and warps), and do a few other neat things. This image is generated in real-time and also has a mode that just displays terrain, useful for learning your way around the map.
There are a few symbols you'll need to know:
- Squares are bases. Big colored circles are bases currently being claimed by the faction represented by the circle's color.
- Diamonds are generators.
- Circles are relays
Also of note:
- The numbers inside the objectives are the objective's number. If you look at the
baselist,
relaylist, and
genlist commands, you'll see numbers besides the names.
Fuel Usage and Replenishment
When units spawn, they use up some of the fuel in the base they spawn from. The amount of fuel used for any given unit may be checked by using the
viewref/specs <unitref> command. Look under the Spawn Cost field. More details on spawning may be found on the spawning page.
Bases must be refueled from time to time, you may watch the fuel levels drop via the
baselist command. To recharge your base, you will need to fuel it. See the fueling page for details on how to do so. Optionally, your faction may claim Generators, which automatically refuel your bases at intervals.
Capturing Bases
In order to capture a base, you must be at mech or a tank and at least 60 tons that is no faster than 5/8 (84 kph). You then simply walk over the base's hex to initiate a claim; however, you must be in a normal movement mode (you cannot be sprinting or evading). The base will then enter the claim phase, and the time left will be shown on the
baselist command.
| | Note: Units may not spawn from a base being claimed! |
Holding Base Claims
Once a base claim has been initiated, a mech or tank of claimable weight and speed much stay within 10 hexes of the base. In order for your friends to gain any payout on the claim, they can be up to 30 hexes from base.
| | Note: This claim-holder must be in a normal movement mode at all times and cannot go in water hex. |
The Recovery Period
After the claim time has elapsed, bases enter a recovery period. The time left for the recover period is shown on the
baselist command. During the recovery period, no units may spawn, similar to the way things are during the actual claim.
| | Note: The base may not be claimed by another faction during the recovery period. |
Interrupting Claims
While a base is claiming, any other faction can interrupt the claim by clearing all claim-capable enemy units from within 10 hexes of the base, then running over the base hex as if they were starting a claim. If the faction that owns the base being claimed clears the units and hits the hex, they have effectively resecured the base for themselves. If another faction clears all units from within the 10 hex radius of the base, they may stop the enemy claim and start their own.
| | Note: Claims may be started regardless of whether there are enemies within range of the base. |
| | Note: See the claiming section for a definition of "claim capable" units. |
Abandoned Claims
To keep a claim active, a unit from the claiming faction must remain within 10 hexes of the base hex. If at any time there are no units from the claiming faction within 10 hexes of the base, the claim may go defunct and the base will return to normal status.
| | Tip: The tonnage and type of the unit within 10 hexes must be claim capable. |
Faction HQs
Each faction has one non-captureable base with unlimited fuel, otherwise known as the HQ. Spawning from the HQ has no 30 second delay, and you can leave the base as soon as your unit starts up. You can see the coordinates of your HQ in the last line of the
baselist command.
