Step 1: Get Perl
Xpertmud uses perl as primary scripting language, which is available for most operating systems. Perl is used to power the BattletechMUX HUD Plugin and is required for it to work!
Windows
For Windows we're using the ActivePerl 5.8 Distribution from ActiveState. It's a pretty big file but you'll only need it once. We generally reconmend the .msi installer, but the packages should work as well.
| Warning: Make sure you get ActivePerl 5.8 and not 5.6. Xpertmud will run erratically or not at all under 5.6. |
Download the installer and double click on it once you have it. Go through the setup process and use the default values for everything. Once this is installed successfully, it's safe to remove the .msi file.
If you get library error messages while running xpertmud later on, please try to reboot once if you didn't after installing perl.
Linux
If you are running Linux, obtain your distribution's Perl package or download and compile it yourself. Most distributions come with perl installed by default, but are missing the required development files. Look for a package named "perl-devel", "libperl-devel" or similar. This will allow you to use perl scripts such as the BattletechMUX HUD plugin.
Step 2: Get Xpertmud
Once you have Perl set up, you're ready to download and set up Xpertmud
Windows
First, download the most recent xpertmud.zip for Windows.
Unzip it somewhere (I usually put it into C:\Program Files\xpertmud\, but any location should be fine)
Now you should be ready to run the contained xpertmud-qt.exe by double clicking it in the xpertmud folder. To make it easier to get to and quicker to launch, we suggest adding a shortcut to your desktop.
Linux
Linux Dependencies
Xpertmud requires the following libraries/applications to function on Linux:
- automake-1.9
- perl
- Qt libs (>= 3.0) and libqt-mt
- KDE libs
- gcc
- libxml2
- libx11-dev
Downloading and Compiling the Source
The latest Linux version is available through Xpertmud's SVN repository. This means you will need to have SVN installed on your Linux box along with a C++ compiler and Qt headers. The commands for getting the latest version of Xpertmud from SVN are available on the SVN page but we'll mirror them here for ease of reading:
svn co https://xpertmud.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/xpertmud xpertmud
This will create an xpertmud directory and fill it with the needed files to compile it. CD into it and read the installation instructions in the README and INSTALL files.
You will then need to do a
make -f Makefile.dist
to create a configure file. From there, you may configure whatever options you need. The most common configure flags would be something like this:
./configure --enable-perl --disable-python --disable-ruby
If you want to do a local installation into your home directory/.kde:
./configure --enable-perl --disable-python --disable-ruby --prefix=/home/yourhome/.kde
Note that you'll need to add /home/yourhome/.kde/bin to your path after completing the install.
If you run Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04, Silk has created a Ubuntu Hardy Heron Guide to build xpertmud and create a menu launcher.
Step 3: Launch Xpertmud
Windows
Double-Click on your Xpertmud shortcut or the xpertmud-qt.exe file.
Linux
After installing Xpertmud, you should be able to type xpertmud if the kde bin directory is in your path, otherwise find the xpertmud binary and execute it manually or create a symbolic link for it. (e.g. with ln -s /path/to/xpertmud /dest/to/link)
Step 4: Connecting to a Game
Once Xpertmud is started up, select File->Open in the menu, and choose the appropriate .xmud file. If you don't know which to select, try out frontiers.xmud.
Select Connection->Connect, and you should see the Frontier Login screen. Type in the connect command with your username/password, and it should open several new windows in the background.
If the game you wish to connect to isn't included in the package, you can add a new connection under the File menu.
Setting up a bookmark
Now you probably want to set it up to autmatically log in with your username and password every time you connect: Open the bookmark editor from the File menu, go to the Connection tab. Select the Connection with ID "0" from the list, and type in the full connect command into the "Login-Sequence" field. Make sure you hit <Enter> in there, too, otherwise the command is sent without it. Save the boomark under a different name, so it won't be overwritten when you update.
Step 5: Activating and Using the HUD
Activating the HUD is as simple as hitting F6 once you are out in a mech and hitting F5 when you leave it to deactivate the HUD. If you don't see your unit on the map display to the right, right click on the map and hit Follow Self.
You are now free to begin experimenting with and learning Xpertmud. See the other pages from the Xpertmud index to learn more and see where you can go to report bugs and feedback.
