Changing Modes

  • F6: Activate the HUD, enables most of the other hotkeys
  • F5: Deactivate the HUD
  • F7-F10: Control the BattleRecorder.
  • Shift-Return: Switch whether "%r" or " " should be generated for Linebreaks in the input
  • Ctrl-Return: Expand the input line, enter multi-line mode

Moving your Mech

The Keys 1-9 on your Numpad change heading. You get the usual 60-90-120... headings when Numlock is active, and 30-90-150.. headings without it (useful when piloting along a hex edge) "5" on the numpad sets speed 0, "0" sets speed flank, "." starts backing. Together with the ALT Key, the numpad keys also execute "rottorso" in different directions

Combat

the divide key on the numpad shows your "status". multiply would show contacts. Alt Together with 0-9 sights the weapon with that no., with ctrl it fires. F1-F4 trigger Firetic 1 - 4. (on linux F1 somtimes triggers the online-help instead, as F10 - F12 are registered as F1 you can use them) The Enter-Key on the numpad relocks the last locked target. Together with CTRL, the numpad can be used to target different sections on a mech, e.g. Ctrl-Numpad_8 targets head.

Generic Hotkeys

For every key that isn't bound elsewhere, Ctrl-<Key> sends ".<key>". That way you have easy access to all the one-character macros you might have server-side (.ex 0 to see a list) E.g. Ctrl-K would send ".k" meaning "kick" in my setup.

Mouse Control

Most HUD Elements can be controlled with the mouse, so they're more than just a display.

Map

The map has a context menu available on right-click:

  • "Lock" opens a sub menu with different lock options: (TODO: links to BMI)
    • "IDF" locks the hex without modifiers
    • "Building" locks with the "b" modifier
    • "Clear" locks with the "c" modifier
    • "Ignite" locks with the "i" modifier
    • "Hex" locks with the "h" modifier
  • "Tactical" requests the map piece arround the location you clicked and updates its display. This option is also available as double-click on the map
  • "Jump To" calculates your distance and bearing to the clicked hex, and executes a jump command.
  • "Follow Self" keeps the map centered on your mech.
  • "Misc" Submenu:
    • "Show Quickbar" displays and additional slider to the top to change the zoom level (If you don't have a mouse-wheel)
    • "Save/Load Map" Save or load the current map in mux format (basically plain text). Handy if you want to store already explored areas, or want to view a map file you downloaded.
    • "Clear Map" Empties the map, usefull if you changed the map, like when you left an elevator, entered a TP map etc
    • "Save Image" Creates a image file of the whole map. Supported file formats depend on your OS, but PNG and JPG should work everywhere, with PNG having smaller filesize at a way better quality. Be aware that the map is drawn with the currently selected zoom level, and can easily suck up several gigabytes of RAM during creation.

If you right-click on a mech instead of an empty hex, the menu offers some different entries:

  • "Lock" locks the clicked mech (also available as double-click on a mech)
  • "Scan" scans the clicked mech
  • "Follow" keeps the map centered on that mech, just like "Follow Self" does with your own.

Left click the map and drag it to change where you're locking at. Single left clicks are available for scripts to bind actions on, and do nothing by default.

Middle click on the map to change your heading into that direction.

Mouse Wheel on the map changes zoom level.

Note: Some (ancient) mouse drivers on windows do strange things with the mouse wheel and the middle button. They try to translate them into key presses (like PgUp/Down etc). That won't work well with xpertmud. Look for some driver options to send middle button as "middle button", or use the driver that ships with windows, not the one that came with your mouse.

Speed

This little slider shows your current speed. Click it to change it.

Weapons

Shows the weapons on your mech, together with their ranges, damage stats, heat production and recycle timer. The background color behind each line changexs with the heat you'll have AFTER firing it, so it helps you control heat. The heat prediction does not take your weapon tics into account, and of course can't predict any engine crits, weapon failures and stuff, but for most of the time it's quite accurate.
